Great lens!
This lens is very good, and very powerful. The VR is really efficient: with good light, you can take picture without tripod at 300mm without any trouble.
The only cons I have is when the light is not strong enough: this lens needs a lot of light.. or a tripod. Otherwise your pictures will be blurry.
But for this price and this great quality, I don’t really care and I am enjoying it!!

Outstanding value
I’ve found the optical performance of this VR lens to be flawless. It is easy to manipulate, especially with the focus ring being close to the camera body (instead of the other end of the lens). My only suggested improvement would be to have a tripod mount on the lens itself. The package becomes rather unbalanced when your only choice is to use the camera’s tripod mount.

Excellent lens
This lens was to replace our existing Sigma 70-300 APO. Not only is the Nikkor far sharper, but it also has the built in silent focus motor (AF-S) and vibration reduction (VR). This is our first lens with VR and it works very well allowing the lens to be hand-held. We always used the Sigma on a tripod. While it’s no match for the 70-200 F/2.8 Nikkor, at 3x the price, this lens beats other consumer telephoto zoom lenses I’ve tried. By far the best 70-300 available.

Expensive. Powerful. Impressive. Worth it.
It’s the most expensive speedlight Nikon makes. It’s got a million and one options, a significant number of them fairly useful. Highly adjustable, from 1/1 to 1/128 in 1/3ev steps.

There’s plenty of reviews that will give you all sorts of statistics and features, so I’ll just comment on the user experience.

You can’t get a better speedlight. It works amazingly well.

If you’re wavering between this and the SB-600, ask yourself if you need a PC synch port or a few of the other high end options. If the answer is no, save your $ and get a SB-600. If you need something impressive, get this.

If you need a lot of light? Get some Alien Bees.

Damn Good Flash………….
The Nikon SB-800 I would have to say is the best flash for the money, I have friends that are pro photographers and they have this flash, I am just starting out doing photography and I was not hot on spending alot of money on a flash, but I can say this was worth it when you start using this SB-800 you will know, it was worth getting. I am still learning all the things I can do with this and the one thing I have to say I love this flash…..

Best battery powered flash… anywhere!
Having been in photography less than a year, it still took me about 45 minutes to figure out the SB-800. This includes using it in full off camera iTTL CLS mode as well as Remote and SU-4 mode on my D200.

While on a recent vacation, I set the flash manually to 1/2 power and was able to clearly light and see people in my pictures. This would not be impressive, except that it was in a totally dark arena and the people that I lit and clearly captured were on the OTHER FAR SIDE of the arena (mind you, this is width, not length-wise. NO flash can do this distance the long way on 1/2 power!). The SB-800 is extremely powerful as a flash.

This strobe is still as of today (April 2008), the STRONGEST on camera flash available on the market, it is also the most versatile. I’ve used it in conjunction as a bounce flash, fill flash and trigger flash for 120v studio strobes that have integrated optical triggers. I have used it as a remote flash to create amazingly well lit and professional looking portraits of family and friends. I am adding a second (possibly third as well) SB-800 to my collection to be able to have an extremely versatile and powerful portable flash setup.

I’ve put my SB-800 through hell and back, and it has never let me down. If you are a serious professional or an enthusiastic amateur like myself with a Nikon camera, you cannot make a better choice of flash than Nikon’s SB-800.

Display’s the Thing The most easily visible upgrade on the EOS 40D Digital SLR is the camera’s larger 3.0-inch LCD screen (compared with the EOS 30D’s 2.5-inch monitor). Still, size is only the beginning of the difference between these two cameras’ displays. In order to increase viewing ease in outdoor conditions such as bright sunlight, Canon raised the brightness level of the EOS 40D camera’s 230,000-pixel LCD screen, broadened the color gamut, and narrowed the viewing angle from 170 degrees to a still wide 140-degree perspective in all directions. An added advantage of the larger-sized display is the ability to use a larger font size for text, making it easier to read setting and menu options on the screen. The camera’s menu is organized in the same tabbed format as the EOS-1D Mark III Digital SLR.

Canon extends its “ease-of-reading” policy to the EOS 40D SLR’s viewfinder as well. The upgraded viewfinder increases optical magnification from 0.90x to 0.95x, expands the viewing angle from 251 degrees to 264 degrees and raises the eye point from 20mm to 22mm.

Enhanced Durability Recognizing the often rigorous shooting conditions encountered by professional and advanced amateur photographers, Canon design engineers made the EOS 40D SLR’s magnesium alloy exterior even more ruggedly dependable than its predecessors with upgraded dust- and weather-resistant construction, particularly around the camera’s connection ports, battery compartment, and single-slot compact flash (CF) memory card door. Should the user inadvertently open the compact flash card door while the camera is writing to the card, a warning will pop up on the LCD screen and an open door “alarm” will sound, but the image(s) will continue writing to the memory card without interruption. The EOS 40D SLR also retains many of the outstanding features of the EOS 30D model, such as its fast 0.15-second initial start-up, its extremely durable shutter (rated up to 100,000 cycles), its top shutter speed of 1/8000 second, and 1/250 maximum X-sync flash shutter speed setting.

Improved Image Quality Although it is based on the image sensor used in the EOS Digital Rebel XTi, the EOS 40D Digital SLR’s 10.1-megapixel CMOS APS-C size image sensor has been significantly improved thanks to the use of larger microlenses over each pixel to reduce noise and expand sensitivity up to ISO 3200. The EOS 40D retains the model 30D camera’s 1.6x focal length conversion factor (compared to full-frame digital image sensors or 35mm film) and is compatible with the full line-up of Canon EF lenses as well as the Company’s expanding selection of high-quality, affordable EF-S lenses created specifically for Canon digital SLRs with APS-C size image sensors.

Adding to the improved virtuosity of the images captured by the EOS 40D SLR is the camera’s 14-bit Analog-to-Digital (A/D) conversion process. Able to recognize 16,384 colors per channel (four times the number of colors recognized by the EOS 30D SLR’s 12-bit conversion capability), the EOS 40D camera is able to produce images with finer and more accurate gradations of tones and colors. The EOS 40D also incorporates the optional Highlight Tone Priority and High-ISO Noise Reduction functions first introduced earlier this year with the EOS-1D Mark III Professional Digital SLR.

DIGIC III DIGIC III is the latest generation of Canon’s proprietary image processing engine. DIGIC III technology ensures that the fine details and natural colors of the images are optimally recorded and, as an added bonus, is also responsible for the EOS 40D SLR’s high-speed performance, faster signal processing, and even its efficient energy consumption.

sRAW In addition to retaining the RAW image capture capabilities of its predecessors, the EOS 40D SLR now offers a more manageable “sRAW” recording format. In sRAW mode, the number of pixels is reduced to one-fourth that of a standard RAW image and the file size is cut in half, while retaining all of the flexibility and creative possibilities associated with full-size, conventional RAW images.

Improved Autofocus and Exposure Control While the EOS 40D SLR maintains the nine-point wide area AF coverage first introduced on the EOS 20D camera, Canon has made significant improvements to its speed, precision, and functionality, minimizing subject recognition problems in the process. The EOS 40D camera’s completely redesigned nine-point AF sensor provides cross-type AF measurement at all nine focusing points for maximum apertures up to f5.6, and for the first time in any EOS camera, the central AF point offers enhanced precision for both vertical and horizontal subject contrast when using EF or EF-S lenses featuring maximum apertures of f2.8 or faster. AF calculation speed with the EOS 40D camera is 30 percent faster than the EOS 30D model.

The Canon EOS 40D Digital SLR retains the same 35-zone metering sensor as its predecessor. Available patterns include Evaluative metering, which is linked to all AF points and is set automatically in the Basic Zone modes, Centerweighted average metering, Partial metering, and Spot metering, covering approximately 9 percent or 3.8 percent of the viewfinder at center, respectively. The camera’s E-TTL II autoflash and 12 exposure control modes (11 AE modes plus manual) are also unchanged from the EOS 30D SLR model. However, as a result of consumer input, Canon has added three Custom exposure modes. As an added convenience, particularly for wireless flash operations, users can adjust the flash settings of the Canon Speedlite 580EX II directly from the camera.

The Canon EOS 40D camera offers ISO speeds from ISO 100 to ISO 1600 in 1/3-stop increments. Users can also opt for a high-speed setting of ISO 3200. For the first time in any EOS camera, the 40D model offers Auto ISO capability in Creative Zone exposure modes. This valuable new feature adjusts the ISO speed to the optimal setting based on low light or shaky shooting conditions. Additionally, the EOS 40D provides full-time display of the active ISO speed setting, both in the viewfinder as well as on the top LCD data panel.

The Canon EOS 40D Digital SLR is also the first camera in its class to offer two interchangeable focusing screens in addition to the standard precision matte screen. Users can opt for a grid-type focus screen that makes it easier to verify horizontal or vertical alignment while determining image composition, as well as the Super-Precision Matte focusing screen that makes it easier to grasp the “sweet spot” of manual focusing when using a lens with a maximum aperture of f2.8 or faster.

Enhanced Live View Previously the province of the EOS-1D Mark III DSLR (one of Canon’s top-tier professional cameras), the Live View function now gives EOS 40D camera users an expanded and exceedingly convenient and comfortable set of shooting options. By permitting the framing and capturing of subjects using the camera’s LCD screen instead of the viewfinder, the shooter gains a 100 percent field view to more easily achieve the desired composition. A new Custom Function on the EOS 40D allows autofocus during Live View by pressing the camera’s AF-ON button. At that point, the reflex mirror goes down and AF is carried out in the normal way. Letting go of the AF-ON button resumes Live View functions. Also, in the Live View shooting mode the user can magnify the image by five or ten times in order to ensure that the shot is optimally focused. Live View is at its best during tripod shooting–particularly for close-up photography where precise focusing is imperative. As a side benefit, the Live View shooting mode helps to reduce vibration by lifting the reflex mirror out of the optical path well in advance of the exposure, improving image quality at slow shutter speeds. A new electronic 1st-curtain shutter function in Live View mode reduces release time lag and operational noise even further to avoid spooking wildlife or disturbing people nearby with unwanted camera sounds. Additionally, as the release time lag is miniscule, even instantaneous movements like a bird taking flight can be readily captured.

EOS Integrated Cleaning System First introduced on the EOS Digital Rebel XTi camera, the EOS Integrated Cleaning System is a prime example of trickle-up technology and is now becoming a standard feature on all new EOS Digital SLRs. The camera’s Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit uses ultrasonic vibrations to literally shake dust particles off of the low-pass filter in front of the sensor each time the camera is powered up or shut down. Users also have the option of engaging the “clean now” function at will or bypassing it altogether. Additionally, the EOS 40D SLR’s manual sensor cleaning function raises the mirror and allows users to clean dust that has stuck to the low-pass filter. Dust that has been shaken or blown loose is then trapped by adhesive at the base of the sensor unit housing, preventing the problematic particles from reattaching themselves to the filter when the camera moves. The second part of the cleaning system is a software solution that maps the location of any spots that may remain on the sensor. The mapped information is saved as Dust Delete Data and attached to the image file. Subsequently, the offending dust information is subtracted from the final image during post processing with a compatible personal computer, using the supplied Digital Photo Professional software.

Improved Software Among the most valuable features of the Canon EOS 40D Digital SLR is its compatibility with Canon’s Picture Style Editor (PSE) 1.0 software. With PSE, shooters can actually design the look of their photographs by inputting their own preferred style, color, and tone curves. The EOS 40D Digital SLR also ships with the latest versions of Canon’s powerful software applications, including Digital Photo Professional 3.1 and EOS Utility 2.1, which now support the camera’s Remote Live View and Dust Delete Data functions, as well as incorporating a broad range of additional improvements designed to improve image quality and speed up workflow. Also included are ZoomBrowser EX 5.8 and ImageBrowser 5.8 for easy browsing, viewing, printing, and archiving with compatible computer operating systems, including Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows XP, as well as Mac OS X.

Accessories (Not Included–Must be Purchased Separately) New system accessories for the EOS 40D SLR include the redesigned high-capacity Battery Grip BG-E2N, which facilitates high-volume shooting and easier vertical shooting. Love it
I have the 20D that I use for wedding photography, and was looking for a 2nd body for a backup. I chose the 40D for 10.1MP and the larger viewfinder. I also was unimpressed with the 5D reviews. I have to say that I really like the 40D. It is quick, the buffer is large, and the addition of creative zones are a big improvement. The price couldn’t be better for a 2nd unit, and now my 20D is getting some much needed rest

I have shot over 2000 shots with no issues. I normally shoot in Aperture Priority or Time Priority settings for the most versatility.

Awesome camera
First off – this review is from an entry-level photographer, I have only had point & shoots prior to this. This is my first DSLR so I don’t have a ton of experience…I just want to take great pictures, mostly of the family, pets, vacation, occasional sporting events, etc. This camera is great. I just got it over the weekend and I am so amazed by the awesome pictures that I am already seeing. Anyone thinking of getting this camera – don’t worry, you will not be disappointed.
Also, the IS lens that is included in kit is pretty nice too. You can definitely notice the IS at work. I tried out an older zoom lens that my dad had (w/o IS) and there was a noticeable improvement with the IS lens.

40D is a Quantum Leap Over Rebel Series
As a fan of the Canon family of DSLR cameras, when Amazone offered a Gold Box Special on this exciting new model that had come out, I jumped on it. As a former owner of the Rebel Xti camera, I was already familiar with a lot of the camera menus and software that Canon includes with its product. But I didn’t expect the quality build that this new model has.

Its metal body, although adding considerable weight to the camera over my Rebel series camera, also adds a very comfortable feel in your hand. It truly feels like a Pro-sumer product that it professes to be.

For the advanced enthusiast this camera is a must have either as your primary body or as a backup for your professional model.

The CMOS advantage With five years of in-house CMOS development since the original EOS D30, Canon’s latest CMOS sensor features 12.8-megapixel resolution, and the same second-generation on-chip noise reduction circuitry used on the EOS-1Ds Mark II. Ergonomics and control The ‘Premium EOS’ design features a magnesium alloy exterior with rubberized grip surfaces. The discreet and lightweight compact body measures just 152 x 113 x 75 millimeters and weighs only 810 grams, making it two thirds the volume and weight of the EOS-1Ds Mark II.

In a handy new feature, current camera settings can be stored and assigned to the C (camera settings) position on the Mode Dial. Incomparable Canon Optical Image Stabilizer — in the lens where it belongs Canon pioneered the Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS), and today you can find Canon OIS technology in a wide spectrum of optical instruments, from high-powered binoculars to broadcast television lenses and camcorders and, of course, EF lenses for the Canon EOS System. The focal length of the lens is the primary determining factor in the amount of image blurring that can be expected from typical hand-holding. Optional Features

Also compatible with EX series Speedlites and other EOS accessories, the camera provides photographers with a highly adaptable and flexible camera system. Incredible Quality
I have owned the 5D for about 5 months. I was waiting for the 5D Mark II but I decided not to wait any longer and I am glad I didn’t. Previously I had used a Rebel XT that I still own and have as a second body. Reading the review that gave it only 2 stars is just a bit dissapointing. The overwhelming number of people (pros and amateurs alike) that have truly used this camera as it was designed (that is, coupled with the right choice of lens) have had outstanding results. This camera is excellent when used with the right lens; I have used it with my Canon 16-35mm 2.8 L II and the full frame just sings edge to edge with beautiful,smooth tones and sharpness (think exquisite landscapes). Vigneting is not an issue in my experience; because of all the reviews posted, to go into a full review will be repetitious so I won’t. Just for fun, I used a “consumer” lens to test it and it truly shows all the flaws of the cheaper optics; this reinforced the notion that you really cannot use this camera with lower quality glass.
In addition, I have used it with my Canon 70-200mm 2.8 L with excellent results (portraiture and sports).
I am not a Canon snob; in my 20 years of the hobby, I have used and still own a Nikon F with Nikkor lenses, as well as other Pentax and Canon cameras. I truly believe that now Canon has the best selection of lenses to go with many future cameras (I am still waiting for the 5D Mark II). The closest camera that Nikon has that is full frame is the D3, which has received great reviews but retails for $5,000.
Summary- This is an outstanding camera for the price; it has taken my photography to a whole new level.

D300? 5D? Hard choice for every people
Actually, at first, I wanna buy D300+17-55mm f/2.8G. I think the D300 is a really good camera with a lot of advanced function. But the problem is you have to deal with the crop factor, that’s how your 17-55mm become 24-80mm. So when you join in the family of full size sensor camera 3 years later,(the ASP size sensor camera will definitely be disappear) you will find your lens which actually is the most important thing for you can not suitable for the full size sensor, like 17-55mm. Nobody will use 17-55mm on your D3 or D3 mark2, right? So, I change my mind. I choose 5D+24-70mm f/2.8G. That means I do not have to buy everything new after 3 years when I change into 1Ds mark3 or something else.

But, you have to know what is the meaning of 5D. 5D is 3 years old. Do not expect too much on some fabulous function. Please just foucs on the real image quality.

And do not wait for the 5D mark 2. Everybody knows that the price will exceed $3000 in the first 6 months.

Don’t Be Fooled, the 5D is THE Way to Go
There are tons of raving reviews about the amazing 5D, so no repeating all that. There is one reason the 5D is THE choice: the full frame sensor, hands down. The image quality is umatched and is super low noise BECAUSE of the larger sensor. You see it in the top end cameras costing up to eight grand, but the difference is, you get it for this incredible price. Sure, there are things that people aren’t happy with on the 5D like menus and no weather sealing, but in the end, image quality is what it’s all about. For landscapes and nature shots and anything else where the rich look of a medium format camera is desired, the 5D does it. Of course, if you can afford the 21MP 1Ds Mk III, go get that. Otherwise, the 5D is primo.

Important things to know:
-No pop up flash. No offense, this is a real camera. Get a real flash for it. Pop up flashes are for snapshots. Better choice: set ISO to 1600 and get natural light images (yep, 1600, and it looks good due to: the full frame sensor! Your friend with the Rebel can’t do ISO 1600 without gobs of noise).
-Flash sync at 1/200, not 1/250. If you do sports photos and hook up to the wireless flash systems in arenas, this might be an issue. For everyone else, you’ll not even notice.
-Get some big CF cards, the RAW files can get up to 15MB each.
-The JPEGs don’t come out all that great. Be prepared to use the RAW files and your results will be phenomenal (note: the 5D has built-in “Picture Styles” for JPEGs… you may get good results with that. I only use RAW).
-No EF-S lenses on this camera. It only uses real EF lenses (the better ones).

I can’t rave enough about this 5D. To get full frame for this price is insane, I can’t imagine using cropped sensor cameras ever again. BTW, your cropped sensor cameras (20D, 30D, 40D, etc) don’t turn a 200mm lens into a 320mm lens, it just crops it. Big difference. Don’t let that sales pitch fool you. You can crop your 5D image to look the same and still have the image quality of the 10MP cropped cameras. Get the 5D.

Great camera, lousy lens
We all know how great the camera is. The lens in this kit is one of the worst made lenses I have ever seen. When fully extended the front of the lens actually wobbles! Looking through the viewfinder while the autofocus changes, you can see the image jump up and down as it shifts around. Cheaply made. You’re better off buying the body only and opting for a better lens. Because of the conversion factor, the 28mm is closer to a 45mm – pretty useless. You have to be around 10 feet away to fit a couple of people fully in frame!

14-bit A/D converter With the EOS Rebel XSi, analog to digital signal conversion is executed by a 14-bit processor, which generates digital data with incredibly smooth tones. Formerly a feature only present in top-of-the-line pro digital SLR cameras, the 14-bit conversion gives incredibly smooth transitions from light to dark colors, with far less risk of “banding.” A sky at sunset is a perfect example. With this rich 14-bit gradation the EOS Rebel XSi offers RAW images of the highest quality that can be processed with Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software. Even JPEG files, which are always finished at 8-bits per channel, use the full 14-bit conversion initially to generate the best possible color and tonal detail. EOS Integrated Cleaning System Photographers who must change lenses in dusty environments will find the advanced Canon EOS Integrated Cleaning System a tremendous time saver. Dust that settles on the sensor surface is removed using ultrasonic vibration. This Self Cleaning Sensor Unit routine is automatically activated whenever the camera is powered on or off. (It can also be manually activated.) A special collar positioned around the sensor collects the loosened dust. Dust particles can also be automatically removed via software. By shooting a plain white subject, the photographer can acquire dust position data that is transmitted along with the image (whether JPEG or RAW). Canon Digital Photo Professional (DPP) version 3.3 or later software can be used to manually or automatically erase the dust spots. It’s not one feature, it’s a built-in system to minimize the effect of dust in high-resolution digital images.

Self Cleaning Sensor Unit A key element of minimizing dust is preventing it from clinging to the front surface of the imaging sensor. To combat against this, the EOS Rebel XSi features a Canon-designed Self Cleaning Sensor Unit. The low-pass filter at the front of the sensor shakes off dust automatically with ultrasonic vibrations, removing dust from the sensor assembly. The EOS Rebel XSi has a new coating on the front surface of the low-pass filter, to increase its resistance to dust sticking to the sensor.

Dust Delete Data Detection Dust that may still remain on the front of the sensor can also be erased with software included in Digital Photo Professional (DPP) Version 3.3 or later software. A simple test shot of a plain, white object can be taken, using a menu setting. This Dust Delete Data image is analyzed in-camera, and the location and size of any remaining dust is added to any subsequent pictures taken. This data is transmitted along with the image, whether JPEG or RAW, and can be either manually or automatically erased in Canon’s DPP version 3.3 and later software. This added software option ensures the cleanest possible image, perfect for printing or archiving.

Picture Style settings With the EOS Rebel XSi’s Picture Style technology, photographers can change the look of their digital photographs. Color, saturation, sharpness and contrast settings create noticeable variation in the saved image. Changing a Picture Style setting is almost like a 35mm film user switching from one type of color film to another. In addition to six preset Picture Style settings, Canon offers additional downloadable “Picture Style Files,” that can be installed into your camera for even more imaging options at your fingertips.

Highlight Tone Priority This vital Custom Function lets photographers get even better detail in bright highlights, even in contrasty lighting conditions. The 430EX is also great for bounce flash, with its tilting and swiveling flash head. It automatically zooms the flash head to cover lenses ranging from 16mm up to 105mm or longer with the EOS Rebel XSi. Dust that has been missed by the Integrated Self Cleaning Sensor Unit can also be erased with software included in Digital Photo Professional (DPP) Version 2.2. The Digital Rebel XTi’s imaging sensor is able to single out the dust particles on its surface, then plots out their location coordinates within the image. This data is transmitted along with the image, whether JPEG or RAW, and can be either manually or automatically erased in Canon’s DPP 2.2. This added software option ensures the cleanest possible image, perfect for printing or archiving.

Beware shady companies
BEWARE Broadway Photo and 1 Way Photo!!!! The reason why their prices are no is because the camera either does not include a battery or the battery the sell it with does not last long. The price spikes when you add a battery. Stick with the websites you are familiar with. Also it is very hard to get a hold them. Wait times are rediculous!

Awesome camera
I love this camera. No more point and shoot. You can do some much more by being able to control shutter speed and aperture and yield awesome results. My professor advised me to get this entry level camera before I explore some of the bigger dogs.
