4 out of 5 stars For frequent travellers   March 15, 2010
Julcortaz (Europe)
Living in Europe and working in China, Kindle solved all my problems of overweight luggages. Instead of carrying a lot of books, I simply have to put my Kindle in the luggage and I'm ready to take my flights. Even if I still love very much the feeling of a real book, I have to say that reading on Kindle is quite pleasant. Unfortunately there are no books for China yet. So when I finish my Kindle books stock, I can only wait to fly back to Europe to download new books.

A frequent travellers ...

4 out of 5 stars Kindle - nice device, but could be done better   March 15, 2010
J. Zahradil (Pilsen, Czech Republic)
Generaly I like this device, screen is great, battery is great, reading is great. But I was upset by some features that are a bit unusable.

1) I read many books with non-english characters and such books must be in UTF8. All my books are in another encoding, and setting cannot be changed in Kindle, so I have to recode all my books (dont now how at this moment)

2) books in UTF8 are sometimes not viewed properly (UTF8 is broken), I am still trying to find out what is causing this behaviour, as one paragraph in book is ok but another one is broken.

3) global wireless for my books is too expensive so practicaly unusable, i have switch it off

4) picture viewer is buggy and slow, so reading comics is not possible, at least not sufficiently comfort (reading is very comfortable)

the last thing - buttons, there are for me a bit though and "clicky" but I guess that it will improve with usage time.

5 out of 5 stars The Kindle experience   March 15, 2010
Robert Jeges (Melbourne, Australia)
The Kindle is a wonderful device. It literally melts in the backgrownd and lets you enjoy the reading. The controls are easy and intuitive, and the reading screen is very comfortaable. The switch at the top could have been a little more visible from the front, but that is a very small detail. Also I would have prefered the page-up button to be at the left, but that is probaly a matter of personal taste.

Downloading is within 60 seconds so you never have to wait long for your new book. There are still many books not available in e-book format, but hopefully the selection continues to grow.

Some of the e-books have better navigation than others and the table of contents varies a bit, but these should be small adjustments and future books should be much better.

Accessing the Kindle store is easy and there is a great selection of books. You can try a sample and decide whether to buy the book or not which is a very attractive feature.

One of the great things is that you can read many books simultaneously, as you can cross-refernce ideas and compare views. You can immediately download a reference book and read the relevant parts before going back to the main book you are reading. You can always come back to the last place you read in any of the multiple books.

The service at Amazon is excellent. One of the best things of the Kindle experience is access to the store and the friendly support you get.

Thanks, Amazon for a great product.

5 out of 5 stars Kindle's answer for books like Ipod is to music   March 15, 2010
David Cook (Everett, WA USA)
The best product I have owned so far. I now read during breaks while watching TV while waiting for my dinner while dining out. On the bus or with my bible in church. I have all my reading at the tip of my finger.

5 out of 5 stars Kindle in Iraq   March 15, 2010
David Dickhens (APO, AE, US)
Im a US Solider over here in Iraq, and Ive been looking at a few different ebooks for awhile now, beacuse lets be honest no one wants to lug around 30+ books with them for a year. At first I was very on edge about purchasing any ebook due to the fact that I had never seen one in person and really knew nothing about them. After some research I found out that the ebook craze started here on Amazon and also that Amazon has the lead on the verity of books offered electronicly. After all my resreach I was still hesitant to purchase the Kindle due the quality of internet provided out here in the lovely sandbox we call Iraq. I also wasnt sure at first if I would be able to download the books through my computer to the Kindle beacuse everything I saw was hyping the 3G free wyfi. Anyways after seeing my tax return I made the decision that if I purchased the kindle and it wasnt what I expected that I could give it to my sister and not be to upset over losing the $250. When it got here I was amazed it took me about 15 min and I already had 25 books on my kindle, I was shocked to see that books where being downloaded in under 30 seconds. It was taking longer to find the books than to actually download them. Then once I started using the Kindle I fell in love, the built in dictionary is awsome for when u come across the seldom used words and you want to know exactly what the author is describing. Im also one of those people that likes to read in bed and this is one of the things that really hooked me with the Kindle because I no longer have to keep shifting postions so that I have light on the left or right side of the book. I just find a comfortable postion and prop the kindle up and Im good to go for hours. I also love the battery life, I always have my Kindle on me wherever I go and the fact that I can go 3 days of constant reading and still have some life left amazes me and the fact that once its fully drained it takes about 2hrs to fully charge while being ued is even better. I have to say I wish I would have known about the kindle 7 months ago before I headed out here, so that I wouldnt have to ship all these books back. As far as the page turning and some of the other negitives I read about when doing my research, I honestly havent had any problems the screen loads faster that i would normally turn to the next page of my actual books. All in all Im pretty sure you can tell that I would recomend the kindle to anyone who love to read. Oh as a side note Im taking college courses online and I found if you get the electronic books if they are in a .pdf format you can throw them on your Kindle as well, this was a huge plus for me.
